Hi Stella,

I'm very curious to learn more about your work with Video Volunteers. I am the Managing Director for the Portland Oregon Women's Film Festival ( and we are currently looking for inspiring films directed by women from around the world. Perhaps you have some recommendations that you might be willing to share? I'd love to speak with you some time about what your organization does.

Thanks so much and I look forward to hearing from you!

VV's work

Dear Andrea

Its wonderful to hear from you. In Video Volunteers (, we are basically trying to build an alternative media landscape where poor and marginalised have a say. In India (like most other countries), we have had a electronic media boom since the '90s. So from a single state-owned TV station in the '80s we now have over a 100 channels, along with uncountable number of local cable TV networks. But these are all owned by about 6/7 business houses and the news producers are from the urban, uppercaste, highly privileged class. Thats why we continue to have huge number of communities and cultures that are unseen and unheard.

We have a bunch of programs with the same goal of empowering community voice, but our most popular ones are IndiaUnheard which is the first ever Community News Service and Community Video Units which you can call a community's own media room.

In both, especially in IndiaUnheard ( we have a large number of women Community corrrespondents, bringing great video reports on their communities. These are videos that present a totally different India. But what is equally unique is that these correspondents have great profiles. There are women who have been victims of domestic violence, marital rape; women who have been homeless because of government's development policies; women who live in remote areas of states where there is a bloody war between the Maoist rebels and the government forces. We also have a Transgender person - now India's first and only Transgender journalist - who was thrown out of home and beaten badly when he declared his sexuality.Together they add to the uniqueness of the program.

I am sorry if you find this message too long. It's just that I feel so passionate about the work that we do here, I really find it difficult to stop talking about it :)

I am excited to be hearing of the film festival and would surely love to know more. Also, look forward to talk to you more in coming days. Till then, here are some videos you could look at - (video by a woman correspondent, describing how rural women are daring to take up farming - considered a male domain here) another correspondent who is a village woman, telling us about women waiting for one long year to taste freedom for a single day)
