Pleased to be part of the Community

Sunita, Thanks for the welcoming words and advise. I'm pleased to be involved in this great effort to make the world a better place.

I have been involved over the last 3 weeks in an interesting global discussion of the impact of integrating UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and gender into the policies and practices of the armed forces, especially those working on peace-keeping missions.

The discussion were aimed at highlighting existing efforts, and trying to strengthen the analysis and replication of good practices. It was great being involved in discussion which sought to foster dynamic exchange of experiences and information between armed forces personnel, civil society, peacekeeping personnel, academics, policy-makers, and members of INGOs with expertise, working experience or a general interest in the role of the armed forces inimplementing UNSCR 1325.

I'll be greatly interested in finding out more about what role the Asian University for Women has played towards implementing UNSCR 1325.

Thanks for the Welcome

Olutosin,

Thanks for the good words, especially about having my wife getting involved. She has traveled with me around the globe since 1991, and clearly has a boatload of experiences along the way. I recall her involvement at a 2002 international Women's Day event at a giant football stadium in Islamabad, Pakistan with women from the Afghanistan refugee community living in Pakistan.

I also want to involve our youngest daughter (who was in Nigeria earlier this year) and works for an American NGO in Washington, DC.

PulseWire Resources

Fatima,

Thank you for the welcoming words, especially about the incredible resources available on this platform.

I have been working with my American Red Cross colleagues today to prepare a 2 minute video responding to a challenge by UN Secretary General for citizen input, choosing one of following three options as the topic for the video:
Why are the Millennium Development Goals important to you and your family?
What is your community, city or country doing to achieve the Millennium Development Goals?
How can the international community better work together to achieve the Millennium Development Goals?

The UN has challenged the international community to achieve the following goals by 2015:
1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. Develop a Global Partnership for Development

We must not fail the people in need around the world is a message I am taking to the American people.
