Introducing Gender Sensitivity into School Curriculum (Your opinion is needed)
Dear group members, I'm seeking your advice. As a participant of the Girls20 Summit in Toronto this year (you can read more about this event in my journal), I've taken on responsibility to design and implement here in Russia a project related to gender issues, something that will benefit the community. Although I studied gender issues in the US, I don't have thorough knowledge of the situation in Russia and CIS countries, and it would be a waste of time and resources to try to apply my understanding of gender in American society to Russian reality. I would really appreciate your opinions and advice.
Project idea: creating a new subject «Gender Studies» and adding it to the existing high school curriculum
-to explain the basics of gender
-to raise awareness about challenges women and girls are facing worldwide
-to focus on Russia as a case study
-to discuss possible solutions to these challenges
-to empower both genders
Creating course curriculum and designing materials
Holding a conference on gender issues for high school teachers to present a new course and raise awareness of the necessity of gender education
High school teachers will be invited to attend a series of seminars where they will be explained how to teach the new course
testing the new subject in schools
Evaluating the results
We are relying on active participation of local authorities and institutions in each of the steps.
Right now we are in the process of creating the course curriculum. We are trying to build relations with experts who would participate in drawing lessons plans.
This is my view on the contents of the course:
1. Defining gender and questioning gender roles and perceptions
2. Why care about gender issues? Why is investment in women and girls called «a global investment»?
3. Some of the major challenges encountering girls and women worldwide. Russia's case study
4. Possible solutions: gender effective public policy
5. Debate section
What are your thoughts on this outline? If you were to create a curriculum for a course in gender studies, what other issues would you include?
Thank you for taking time to read this,
