Honor killings
On the one hand women have traveled to the moon but on the other they are still being killed to protect the honor of the family.
When will it stop? When will women feel safe in a world that doesn't eye them as a
prey?
For the month of July, Shetizenjournalist.com will have the theme of "Honor Killings." Please submit your thoughts.

Perhaps we will not use the descriptor "Honor Killings"
There is no honor in killing -- ever. However, there is sometimes necessity. There is no necessity, and certainly no honor, in killing a woman (often really a girl) because you believe she has somehow brought shame on your family.
What words shall we use instead?
These murders, for that's what they are, result from minor infractions set into place by a devaluation of women: seeing them as property, sexual demons, unclean, and lessor humans. This same belief system, a product of many religions and cultures, is part of a chain of abuses and crimes against women. The same thinking has lead to female slavery, genital mutilation, bride burning, and forced prostitution.
Let us here have a forum to rename this crime against women and stand with our sisters who live in constant fear of death, disease and disfigurement because they were born female.

Janet, I totally agree with
Janet, I totally agree with you. There no 'honor' in honor killings and it is only right that a word like that should not be associated with such a heinous crime.
Change of Name
I really love that idea, in case people continue believing that it is honor killing and not murder in the name of ignorance. i so much subscribe to changing the name.....good thought.
