My Feminist Badge

Today when many of my own generation shy away from calling themselves a feminist -- I always very proudly tell people -- YES, I AM A FEMINIST.

And why am I a feminist?

Because I walk on bridges that feminists before me have built. If today women of the world have rights -- like the right to education, the right to vote, the right to property, the right to divorce, the right to work, the right to a promotion, the right to a payrise, the right to drive, the right to safety, the right to live life on our own terms -- they are not rights that were served to us on a plate.

Every right women take for granted today had to be fought for -- by women! Women died so women can have the right to vote and the right to birth control.

If today I walk on bridges built on the fight and the sacrifices of feminists who came before me -- then it makes it my moral obligation to do the same for the generations of women to come. And the fight to live life in safety and dignity is still on. So if you are reading this (whether you are a man or a woman) -- please next time some one asks you if you are a feminist say 'YES!' and flash this badge :)

Last Topic in Gender

Oh this was the last topic during my Gender training in India, there was outpour of emotion, some people are womanist while tehy hate feminism.....When I was asked to defend feminism...by the time I was through with my explanation, it remains one person who still considered himself as a feminist...because he is a man and what will and he did not know what a man should be called...I knew he was confused.....
And last week I forwarded a mail on The F word to some of my friends and lecturer they remembered and and were happy.....
If today I can vote and be voted for, if today a woman can hold posts that were once reserved for only men, if today I can rest happily after just 2 daughters and not running helter skelter looking for a magic that can change the foetus in my belly to a male...if my husband can call me and say I am happy with these two girls I happily display on facebook and no one is telling me if and who to contact in adopting a male charge to carry on the family tree or family name as the case may be...then the fire of those fighters will not be turned to ashes in my time......
There is no disagreement about feminism now, it is not fight or war, it is just understanding issues that we are equal....no one is saying we are not equal...equality is not a fight between masculinity and femininity it is the understanding that the world is fair and we are one uniquely one......one world one humanity.......
Welldone sister......we are together...

why?

why do they hate feminism? That is what I want to know.

The women's movement today in India unfortunately is like an ingrown toe nail.

It is going in the wrong direction (so for eg. there are women arguing that sati is not murder but cultural and religious way of women committing suicide, so we shouldn't defame it; or that we should continue to allow Muslim men to legally have four wives)

And It is hurting itself (So mothers in law murder daughters in law; women strangle their own baby girls; and when a group of women at a pub last year were molested and beaten up for "violating indian tradition" the NCW (the national commission on women) the highest office protecting women's rights said the women had asked for it because they were drinking and inappropriately dressed.

That is exactly the case

We have to continue what we are doing and hope that all works out well because those who awe believe should be for us are against us too....many people working for GBV do not want to be associated with feminism, they hate tags, they hate this and that and they love that but what I CONTINUE TO TELL THEM IS THAT AS LONG AS YO ARE WITH US YOU ARE NOT AGAINST US, YOU MAY NOT LIKE OUR NAME BUT YOU ARE FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT.
My God save women

Womanist?

Yes I hear women say they are not Feminist but Womanist. what does that mean? Does that mean they want to be in favor of women?

Because as a feminist i don't want any special favors for women. I just want them to have the same rights and dignity and opportunities as men. Not more, not less. But the same.
