Shifting the Message…
May 11, 2010
Since getting back to Haiti from a week work/family trip in New York I have been feeling charged. Most of the stories I see coming out via press and media agencies are about the rubble, and the criticism, and the earthquake. I admit, I too was stuck in the cynical space of only being critic (besides, they do have important roles in this reconstruction effort), etc… What I am feeling now is completely different. I have never felt so exuberant and eager and excited about what is being done here in Haiti, especially at the community level. When you are working on a local level so much action happens, and the beauty of it is that it doesnt take long to get to realizing a plan and implementation.
I am constantly finding myself in a position to support communities and the right resource to connect them to. It is empowering and the energy and livelihood that I wake up with every morning, as I prepare for the obstacles and joys of the day, are contagious.
Instead of being a cynic today, I would like to begin a regime change with this blog and information that I share. I not only want to talk about what is not happening, and will be giving lots of light to what is happening. More stories about the work of local individuals and groups will be coming…
* Relationships are forming. Relationships that benefit grassroots movements and communities.
* ORAC is progressing and we are moving towards action. We are planning two forums that pertain specifically to Carrefour Feuilles. An announcement will be posted soon!
* A new phase is beginning. Emergency relief is still in effect, yet a new phase is beginning focusing on shelter. This allows many local programs and services an opportunity to integrate and have a place in the longterm recovery of Haiti. I am a big believer in this and it will take facilitators and advocates to assure Haitian participation. Annou kanmpe!
Energies are shifting. There is a lot of buzzing and a lot of good work being done here. I am in the thick of it and between the Haiti Response Coalition, Nouvelle Vie Haiti, Muslim Hands, COHEF, and countless other individuals, Haitians and Haitian-Americans, we are truly making a difference.
