Introducing myself and my journal

About Me:
I am a professor of African history and Gender and Women's Studies. My research has focused on gender sexual politics in Southern African history. My current work explores the experience of child refugees from Africa, with a focus on women and girls. I am an engaged scholar. My current areas of research and activism are around issues of sexual and gender based violence in war and its aftermath, the global fight for lgbt rights and justice and women's role in peace building. I believe that the way we will change the world is: 1) believing that we can and 2) listening to those who are.

My Passions:
social justice organizing, excavating women's agency in history,

My Challenges:
creating alliances; learning how not to spread self too thin; combining strengths of different sectors and resisting all orthodoxies.

My Vision for the Future:
Building peace.

My Areas of Expertise:
Historical research, social justice organizing, transnational feminist alliance building.

Welcome Welcome Welcome

Wow! Your description of your teaching was breath-taking! At what university do you teach in Chicago? I have a friend that teaches at NIU. I hail from the midwest myself, originally from Kansas City.

I very much look forward to reading more about your views on gender and politics especially within the context of African girls and women. I studied abroad in South Africa and have a couple of friends that are still there and my best friend is Zimbabwean, living and teaching there and currently with child. Needless to say much of my heart rests in Southern Africa.

Again, welcome! I look forward to many conversations and posts to come.

Much Peace,
