What do you have to give?

29 Gifts

I came across a blog entry this weekend that stopped me in my tracks with its simple but wonderful idea. Rather than explain it, I am posting it here for you to read.

[excerpt from Know Abundance]:
A friend gave me a book recently that I love. The message is simple and yet profound.

The author, Cami Walker was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 33. She spent months immobilized by depression, unable to stop thinking about how the disease would ruin her life and dreams. She became addicted to her meds and self-absorbed in her problems.

She had a friend and spiritual adviser, Mbali Creazzo who told her that she needed to stop thinking about herself. “If you spend all of your time and energy focusing on your pain, you’re feeding the disease. You’re making it worse by putting all of your attention there.”

She encouraged Cami to spend some time focused on others – and to do this by giving away 29 gifts in 29 days. But Cami insisted that she needed to focus all her attention on her own healing, she was worried that focusing on others would sap energy she needed for herself.

Mbali replied, “Healing doesn’t happen in a vacuum, but through our interactions with other people. By giving, you are focusing on what you have to offer others, inviting more abundance into your life. Giving of any kind is taking a positive action that begins the process of change. It will shift your energy for life.“

And it did! You can read Cami’s inspiring story in her book: 29 Gifts – How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life. Or watch a video of her as she describes how the simple act of giving transformed everything.

Now, 29 Gifts is a global giving movement with nearly ten thousand members in 42 countries. I joined this month and encourage you all to share in the joy of giving as a reminder that we are all part of a greater universe.

Going to smile at more strangers!

On a primitive level, we're programmed to fulfill our own needs to survive. But like Lady Gaga's hair, we've wildly overdone this tendency so that we live too selfishly. Oh, if only on a bad day when the car won't start, we're running late and it's raining outside, we remembered that projecting positivity outwardly is one of the best cure-alls to a negative attitude hangover. Instead people internalize the negativity, not realizing they are a participant in a greater community and that negative energy affects everyone and will maintain itself if you let it.
Tap into the good stuff! There's too much unrealized love in the atmosphere and I think everyone should start selfishly soaking up those rays instead of focusing on their own rainy day.
The 29 gifts idea is brilliant, and if nothing else, a great reminder that by brightening someone else's day, your brighten your own.

This is so beautiful because it's just so simple. I am reading a similar book that you might like. I just picked it up the other day at B&N - it's titled: Attitudes of Gratitude - How to Give and Receive Joy Every Day of Your Life by M.J. Ryan.
It's a small volume, not meant to be read cover to cover ... but to sip slowly day by day ... so that what you read becomes more "meditative" than instructional.

Thank you so much for sharing this!

I'll look out for it in the bookstores.... Janice

Thank you Janice for sharing the blog with us. It was really inspiring and a way to overcome ones pain. Such a simple and a wonderful idea. i have also practiced it that by seeing others happy, it gives u a sens of self satisfaction and joy. when the reason of smile for other people become you, yourself lf then it makes you more happy.

yes, exactly, by healing focusing on healing your pain, i think you are making it more worst by feeding the disease. instead of wasting time on how to get rid of the pain, you should see outside and exchange positive emotions.
Thank you Janice.
and please keep sharing such inspiring stories with us.

Warm wishes,
