Reproductive Wisdom

There is a red tent movement that creates safe places for women to be women. Midwives and other women are creating red tents for birthing, for women's conferences, and for gathering places for women to share on a deep level.

I am Chair of Global Outreach for the Sophia Women's World Conference in Sofia, Bulgaria, May 25-29, 2010. We are working on bringing a red tent to this conference as well as helping women around the world hold a Sophia conference in their local community May 25-29, 2010. The Sophia Women's World Conference illuminates and implements UN "living documents" through multi-partnerships for gender equality and a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world.

The AIDS crisis in many places in the world is an issue that the red tent setting can provide a safe place to share best practices. This is just one of the many ways that the Sophia Women's World Conference will help make a difference locally and globally. All are welcome to be part of this journey. website is

tell me more!

I'd love to hear more about the red tent movement. I read (and loved) Anita Diamont's book, The Red Tent , so I assume that this movement you mentioned is based on the early reproductive practice? Also, can you explain a bit more about the UN's concept of "living documents?" You've sparked my interest!

Living Documents & Red Tent

The red tent is a place for women and girls to discuss reproductive wisdom as well as anything else they want. It is a place of luxury for giving birth as well as birth of ideas. It is a place to just be. We had a red tent at the US Social Forum last year. It was created by the Red Web Foundation and two midwives from the Florida Keys.

Red tents are appearing at women's conferences as well as in homes and community centers. A virtual red tent is an internet place. We will be hosting a red tent online discussion where women can discuss reproductive wisdom to stop the AIDS pandemic. This will be a safe place to share best practices in breaking cultural sexual taboos that prevent women from breaking the silence of AIDS and take the lead in AIDS prevention.

UN Living Documents are important documents that have been agreed to by governments and when carried out will transform our world. Living Documents is a phrase that transports them from the desks of UN delegates into the consciousness and practice of all people. The Sophia Women's World Conference is about the illumination and implementation of the UN living documents through multi-partnerships. Every woman is needed. It is the women who lead the way.

Sounds really amazing! Thanks for the extra explanation. I really like the idea of the virtual red tent--it sounds almost like a PulseWire!

Welcome Auma to Sophia WWC

Dear Auma,

The Sophia Women's World Conference is not taking applications until we can decide how to have worldwide representation to the conference that is limited in size to 15,000. How many from the US and what does make up the best representation from all the countries. We are working on a global communications strategy that will connect local celebrations with the Sofia, Bulgarian event so that it is a global event with hundreds of thousands of local celebrations all interconnected.

We are grateful you have registered with Sophia You will find on Light Pages all the documents and also information to weekly informal conference calls as well as our monthly formal conference calls. When you go to Light Pages Center you will find on our Bulletin Board this information. You will find in Documents, our documents. Recently there was a delegation to Sofia, Bulgaria and you will find their report that tells of the outpouring of hospitality and support we are receiving from the mayor of Sofia as well as all the officials and general population.

Our next informal conference call will be Friday.
