Homophobia must STOP

As activists and Human Rights Defenders working for the rights of LGBT persons in our countries, we face countless threats ourselves. Homophobia and Homophobic hate crimes must stop. Uganda's anti gay legislation and similar incidents can happen in our countries too. We must work together to expose the hatred and the ignorance and STOP it now.

Here here

I stand in solidarity with your call to Uganda's government. I am interested to hear about the state of LGBT Rights in Sri Lanka. What is the history of gay rights in your country and what is the general mentality of society there around the LGBT community?

Cheers,
Jade

LGBT rights in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka it is still a criminal offense punishable with up to 10 years in prison. Here, lesbians too are criminalised unlike other colonised countries who have this archaic law - thanks to the British! LGBT persons suffer greatly because they are harassed by the police, their families and society in general. During the time of the LTTE, in the North and the East, they executed LGBT persons. Now it is the Muslim extremists and militias operating in these areas that have an unwritten death penalty for LGBT persons. In fact EQUAL GROUND was threatened with death for working for LGBT rights in the East. We had to go underground for almost 6 months due to this but have now resumed our programs in the East with communities other than the Muslims.

So as you can see it is a difficult situation here exacerbated by the political situation here as well as the rise in fundamentalist attitudes fueled by Sinhala Buddhist Nationalists.
