"Half the Sky" and Making a Difference

PulseWire Members Greetings!

Have you read "Half the Sky" and want to make a difference and share your inspirations? Well, there's a way to do so. Some of the World Pulse Book Club members do not have access to this book. If you have read the book already and want to send it to fellow book lovers, I know that many members would welcome a copy. What a great way to share within our community. We are sharing both inspiration and books now.

I have found that the most powerful message that I have read in "Half the Sky" is, that women are powerful. Women are strong and courageous and are making a difference for themselves and other women around the world. WE are a part of that movement, and now, there is another way to be a part. Share your book! Send a book to woman in her country. Think of the joy for both of you, connecting with PulseWire members, sharing empowerment, inspiration and books. You will both have made a new friend, and a beautiful connection. Wow!

So, if you want to be a part of this exciting exchange, please contact me(Jody, jodelight). If you have the book and are willing to send it to one of our members in their country, or if you are in need of the book. I would be glad to coordinate this.
If you are in need of the book, please contact me with your address:
If you have the book and want to send it to another member, please contact me, and I will try to pair you with book club member who needs the book.
I'll do my absolute best to make this happen, and I know you all will too! Can you imagine how incredible it will be to send your book to a woman in another land, who in turn will receive this book! We are connected and we are capable of making a difference. Everyone of us, together!

I posted this following parable from "Half the Sky" already, but I feel that it is more pertinent than ever:

"A man goes out on the beach and sees that it is covered with starfish that have washed up in the tide. A little boy is walking along, picking them up and throwing them back into the water.
'What are you doing son?' the man asks. 'You see how many starfish there are? You'll never make a difference.'
The boy paused thoughtfully, and picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean.
'It sure made a difference to that one' he said".

Come make a difference and be a part of the movement! No better way than this to share with each other. Send your book to your PulseWire sister!

Dear Jody, That is a

Dear Jody,

That is a wonderful initiative. I can tell as I have benefited :) Thanks once again for the books. Jade has told me that she will be sending me Half the Yellow Sun after she finishes reading it and also try to arrange Half the Sky. Hope you come out with more books on the book club list so that there is enough time left for teh search :)

Lots and lots of Love

Giving two months to a book

Giving two months to a book does make sense, but I'd like to suggest that we discuss "Half of a Yellow Sun" first before "Half the Sky" since we haven't yet had a discussion of that book. So perhaps "Half of a Yellow Sun" is the book we discuss in February.

I don't know how hard it will be for women to join in a Skype discussion and if we try to set up two discussions to accommodate different time zones it increases the complexity of it all. I haven't seem much feedback in this forum regarding interest in Skype. It would be great to hear more feedback on that.

Perhaps we should shoot for one online discussion, where we pick a particular week to post comments. Perhaps if several questions about the book were posed to get us going, then all of the book club members could comment on those questions and raise their own points too, we could get something lively going even if it's not real-time. But if we try to get this happening in a one week period (it could keep going after it too) then we might enable a lively discussion because more people would be checking in that week.

i am looking forward to read the book

Dear Jodelight

Its a great initiative. What a coincidence. just today, i was browsing the market for Half the Sky, but to no avail. I was surprised not to find the book in the market, and the shopowners had no idea about the book. They told me that i was the first person to be looking for the book. I am trying other ways to get the book, like online shopping, but i dont know how fat will it help. I will keep trying nevertheless!

Half the Sky

Hi Khushbu,

I have heard that Half the Sky is being published in many other languages and just started to become available oversees. But hopefully someone from PulseWire who has already read the book can send you their copy. It's a book that everyone should read!

Thank you

Hi Jade

I am really looking forward to read the book. Have heard so many great things about the book.Even if noone from Pulsewire can share, it wont be a problem. I have asked my brother, who studies in India to get it for me since it is easier to find books there than here. I will let you know once i have my hands on it.

Thank you so very much

Monthly book discussion

Hello All!

Thank you so much for your input! I am so excited to connect and discuss with you all.

I know that it is nearing the end of January, and we are still trying get all the logistics worked out for the bookclub. I understand that "Half of a Yellow Sun" has not been discussed yet. What if we try to coordinate a discussion for it, for the end of January. I don't exactly know how to organize the Skype discussions, and know it maybe be a challenge with time differences. Suggestions are welcome! Does anyone want to start with a online thread? Until we figure out the Skype discussions.

I know that some members don't have "Half the Sky" yet, but it's in the works! That's the good news!
I will compile a list of books this week as suggestions, and if you all would, please write in with your choices. We have a wonderful year ahead, full of connection, inspiration and good reads. Sharing books, and sharing ideas.

"The pleasure of all reading is doubled when one lives with another who shares the same books."

Dear Jodelight I finished the

Dear Jodelight

I finished the book last night and I was reading it continuously as soon as I got it. I am so impressed by Somaly's determination and will power but at the same time was depressed to know how girls are being treated in South East Asia. I was also ashamed of myself that I had no idea what was going on with the women in South East Asia as I thought South Asia was the epicentre of human trafficking. This book gave me much more insights on human trafficking and ideas that I can use it in my own nation as I too work with the sex workers and women victimized in domestic violence in Nepal.

Thank you so much once again. Cant thank you enough for sending us the book. Now I am looking forward to Half the Sky, Khushbu will give it to me as soon as she finishes
