A Triumphant Kenya
Since the beginning of this year,Kenyans, for the first time have been seen in a jubilant mood.Kenyans across the country celebrated the announcement made by Hon.Koffi Annan this evening in a meeting that took a surprisingly shorter time than Kenyans had anticipated.
Nairobi was all celebration, as revellers celebrated. Many outlets sold out their food and drink.Kenyans from different ethnic communities exchaged conversation and celebrated together for the first time this year.
In Migori,South Nyanza, the public television houses made hot business as the premises were full to the brim.Kenyans wanted to personally witness the announcement as word had gone round of the positive outcome of the talks.Later, screams of joy filled the air, changing the usually tense and quiet atmosphere that is known to usually dominate the town.
Kisumu town was reported to have closed business,as they celebrated the announcement of the long awaited results.Cyclists decided to cycle no more;it was wiser to carry their bicyles on their shoulders. In the coastal town of Kenya,Mombasa, the mood was no different as the town's people decided that it was best to dance in the streets.
The long awaited results of the talks that had previously come to a stalemate were out. Both parties had come to an agreement.
Hon.Mwai Kibaki was announced president of Kenya.Hon.Raila Odinga the Prime Minister,a post that was previously debated widely in Kenya and which the Government had completely rejected.
"We do have a deal",Hon.Annan said of the agreement. He was assisted by the President of the African Union, and Tanzania,Hon.Jakaya Kikwete.
The party with majority seats would automatically produce the Prime Minister. This time, the two deputy Prime Ministers would be produced by ODM and PNU.President Kibaki will appoint the PNU ministers while ODM will have the power to appoint its own.
President Kibaki promised Kenyans good leadership that would see her through the hardships that had previously been experienced. The prime Minister,Hon.Odinga, expressed that the country was moving from an era of confrontation to the beginning of co-operation.
These posts are not as quoted in the Constitution of Kenya. The turmoil, which had resulted to the deaths of more than 1 500 Kenyans, had to be tactfully brought to a halt.Even though it is taking a positive turn, discontent, rage, displacement, massive losses and death have been experienced.Repair and healing will take a long time. The beginning is here.
