Winter Solstice and Change

Change is all around us and this holiday season as we move toward the darkness and then into the Light, I ask that we embrace change. Winter Solstice can be seen as a time of renewal. We face the dark time of the year and as we do so, we birth in new life. We joyously sing songs and light fires to welcome in the light, the new day, the new beginnings. And while the New Year is a few weeks away, I encourage us to look toward the Solstice as a time of re-birth, using ritual as a way to help us face what is dark in our life and releasing that into the Light. Here is a ritual for cleansing:

I suggest going outside to a sacred space where you can create a small fire, and bring with you on a small piece of paper one fear, one part of darkness in your life that you would like to release. If you are doing this with others, so much the better. Bring with you a few sprigs of holly or pine branches and tie or affix your paper to the pine or holly. Blessing each piece of paper, place them one by one onto the fire pit, brazier, or fire safe bowl. As the fire is lit, and with intention in your heart, silently or out loud, lovingly release your darkness into the fire. Holding hands with those present after you have placed your darkness into the fire will help hold the sacred space of interconnectedness, as we help each other through the metaphorical birth canal into the Light. This can be a very beautiful ceremony and it can also be a very lively one if the decision is made to welcome the coming Light with songs of rejoicing and dancing. Or we can also welcome the Light through silence and reverence. I suggest warming beverages and foods, gingers, golden colored teas, clove, cinnamon. Those foods, herbs, spices that represent warmth. And after being out in the cold will be much welcomed!

Let us recognize that change is inherent in who we are as beings, Life is ever changing and we can not hold onto what is no longer for our highest and best good. In releasing lovingly and willingly, we release the pain that can accompany unwanted change. Embrace change. recognize that Life only ever offers us what is for our highest and best good. Bless all change with a grateful heart and watch the beauty of transformation in your life.

As I encounter my own changes, I remind myself to embrace the flow of Life, to go where it takes me, to let the river of Life guide me. I remind myself to quit fighting, to quit holding on and to relax into the moment. Change is hard, we do fight it, I fight it daily, and when I remind myself to let go and relax, miraculous solutions appear and change becomes not a burden, but a joyful beautiful transformation. I feel change all around me, I feel disharmony and I often find myself engaged in the struggle. Today, I pray for the ability to see with wise eyes and an open heart as I go through the changes I know are entering my life even though I may not know what they look like in this moment.

I bless you all this season. And know that your journey as it weaves and flows is transforming all of you in the most magnificent ways
