Hello to each and every one of you dear ladies,

We have made the difficult decision of selecting the three Correspondents who will represent you all on a speaking tour through the United States next Fall. Through the agonizing, weeks-long selection process, our goal was first and foremost to select a diverse group of women who can represent the broad range of voices that are the Voices of Our Future. We are proud to announce that Sunita, Malayapinas and Jackie have been chosen to speak on behalf of all of our VOF correspondents, the PulseWire members and their communities to the media and politicians as they raise awareness of the issues and concerns that face women every day.

As with each assignment in this program, they will continue to need your support, encouragement and nurturing words along the way. Only together have we been able to get this far! As we embark on this next phase of our journey, let us continue to offer our eyes, ears, hearts, minds and souls to each other. Let us continue to shake the world!

To all of you, we offer our deepest respect, love and gratitude. Each of you deserves formal recognition for the hard work you've put in. The selection of three in no way reflects a lack of power or ability in your work as journalists, or as leading women. You all possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes to have a profound impact on our world! We have provided you with some fuel for your fires, a vase for your flowers, a strand on which to string your jewels. You are powerful women, with vision and courage to spare, and will continue to transform the world!

Your participation over these past months has been remarkable to witness. Your growth as writers, and as empowered leaders has proven to me that no challenge is insurmountable. The obstacles of intermittent electricity, unreliable internet access, job and family obligations, living in conflict zones or with repressive governments, having near-death illnesses...these seem to have been mere speed-bumps along the journey! You all have demonstrated the power of a woman inspired. I am honored that you have shared your voices and visions so freely with the world.

From around the world we've heard stories that inspire, shock, and raise consciousness. As we move ahead, you are invited to continue shining light into the dark corners of our world. As our first graduates of this training program, you are new leaders-- both in your local community, and in the PulseWire community. We will continue to offer our support, new trainings, and creative opportunities. By the end of the year you will receive more information about this next phase, but rest assured, there is a permanent place for you on PulseWire, and in all of our hearts.

It is my deepest wish that we can all continue to exchange our perspectives, our struggles, our solutions. You have shown the world something new, and we are all eager for more! The shift toward valuing women grows stronger every day. Thank you for all of your spirited work in moving us toward a brighter future.

To bring some closure to this part of the program, I invite your comments, questions, and feedback good or bad. We have learned a lot, and your voices are integral to planning a better program next year. Soon I will contact you with a survey to help collect your input. But, for now we invite you to share your thoughts and feelings with this PulseWire group. I cannot over-state how grateful I am to each and every one of you. Working with each of you has brought new meaning to my life, and I hope we can build stronger connections and friendships as we continue our partnership with World Pulse.

With all my love, admiration, blessings and best wishes,
Scott

And yes Scott as far as

And yes Scott as far as feedback is concerned I think u need to clarify the criteria. Regarding the evaualtion of assignments u had done a wonderful job. Make sure u post it in the very beginning in the next prog. But the criteria for the award needs some explanation and that too should be posted in the very beginning. Like does it count how much active u r on pulsewire. All things which count should be listed in the very beginning.

I know we were the first batch so definetely it was an trail and error situation at times and the next prog is going to be much smoother and better. If there is anyother way I can help do tell me.

Regards

Nusrat

Thank you...more clarity coming!

Hello Nusrat, and everyone...

Your comments are so helpful to understand how you're feeling. My heart is melting for all of the non-selected Correspondents. As I said before, our selection in no way reflects any wrong-doing or lack of ability as writers and leaders. You are all incredible women, and if we could, we would love to bring everyone to the US!

We have tried our best to be transparent about our selection process. I will make a new post in the group to help clarify what we went through to decide. The criteria were multifaceted, and required us to try to quantify things that are more qualitative, like Editorial Voice.

And, you're absolutely right, this was trial and error at times. Your feedback is crucial for making next year more smooth and clear. Thank you for your honesty. We're always working to improve our processes, and need your help as you are the HEART of the program.

So, check the next post to the group and let's continue the discussion about the evaluation process.

Warmly,
Scott

SOME MORE FEEDBACK. Scott I

SOME MORE FEEDBACK.

Scott I think for the next year the assignments should be evaluated by a single panel so that they are judged on similar standards. If you give a single assignment to two people they will evaluate it differently. So in order to fair the assignments should be evaluted by a sinle person or panel. It can be Month 1 by someone Month 2 by another.

Also as Tina pointed out You will have to ensure the same editorial guidance to everyone. How that is for u to figure out. I think it is better if u create a team who will be overseeing all the correspondents.

The programme next year is going to be much better :) Keep up the good work.

Congrats!!

Sunita. Malayapinas and Jackie,

A big congratulations!!

And Scott we are behind you.

First, I am so happy that the girls from the troubled part of the world can speak out on our behalf. I guess their "fate was already woven"!!

But, I totally agree with Nusrat.I totally gave the program my all, and never had an excuse (good or bad).I was almost always on time. I do not understand what else I could have done; No feedback yet on where I went wrong e.t.c. so of course my heart bleeds for me! Is it possible to get my personal evaluation on all my pieces? I really want to know how to be a better writer. I'm I even one? So many questions...

My love to all.

Dear Stella, My heart aches

Dear Stella,

My heart aches as your heart bleeds. I don't know if this message can lighten your day but I just wanted to say Thank you so much for the greetings! You are an inspiration to me , even before my Pulsewire /VOF journey - your struggle as an African people has always been my inspiration in my activism here in the Philippines. I admire your struggle for a better tomorrow even in the face of persecution. I draw my strength from you . Together we will raise our voices and sing the songs of freedom!

Hi Stella

Your writing has improved so much over the program! This fact by itself makes it worth it to be here dear Stella. I know many more opportunities will open up to you. Remember this is a community and connections do work.

I do understand your need to know how you did. I know Scott will come up with something that will involve you, your mentor and your midwives, so that you will be totally satisfied with the explanation.

You know you are, first of all, a correspondent. And as such, I know you will have a job to do. Scott will also be telling us how to go about this, but in the meantime get ready to work. Keep writing, the more you write, the more the community gets to know you and you know that to know you is to love you Stella, because you are such a wonderful person.

Hope to read your posts real soon. Keep it up dear friend!

Love,

Jackie

You're wonderful, Stella!

You did give the program your all, heart and soul. My heart breaks to hear your pain and disappointment, and I want you to know how much we love you.

I will send out everyone's evaluations individually so that you can see the feedback on your writing. As you might imagine, there's a lot of work with around 120 evaluations to organize in a format that I can send you. It is coming!

You're a great writer, and you should keep up the practice. You've grown so much already...just think what another year will do! I hope you feel welcome to send me any questions you have, anytime...I'm here to listen and help if I can.

Lots of love,

Overjoyed and wondering about next steps...

Dear Scott et al,
I have been procrastinating a response to the request for feedback from you all in recent posts.

I am of course overjoyed to hear the result of the final three as I was for the final six. Congratulations to all of you! And I hope I will finally get to meet you in person when you come to the US!!!!!

There is no disappointment from me in not making it, as this had not been my goal here anyway. To even have been selected to be a part of this program was award and recognition enough for me, but if I am going to be honest for the purposes of your feedback for future years... as I moved forward with this program a new door opened for me and so then did a new hope.

I am in fact more disappointed about having had nothing chosen or picked up for publication than I am about not making it to the final 3, 6 or even 10. For me, publication would have been an amazing step forward. My feedback on my writing was always so good, so the lack of publication began to create alot of self doubt in my abilities or in why I was even selected to have been part of the program. I appreciate that you were looking for solutions oriented pieces. I was concerned that "My letters from America" piece was not solutions oriented enough for example. However, my writing mentor told me not to change a thing! So was it the subject matter? Was it the content? Was it the style? I don't feel I could improve much on that at all, not with the feedback I got anyway. So if that piece was not publishable through world pulse outlets, perhaps there is somewhere else? How do I find the right outlet? How do I pitch it?

I also wonder about how much help some of the other correspondents got compared to me. I didn't hear anything from one of my writing mentors and I got help from the other for only two of my posts. I wonder if some of those with higher scores got more help? Again, I did not want to receive high scores to win, but I did want to perfect my writing as much as possible. I, like Nusrat, would love to know my scores and receive my feedback on the evaluation criteria so I can learn and grow too. I really love writing now. This program has helped me to find my writing style, has sparked my passion for writing and helped me to realize that maybe this isn't just a pipe dream for me, maybe I really could be a writer. In fact I have even toyed with calling myself a writer already because of this program!

However, while my confidence in my writing has grown, my actual voice seems to have become somewhat lost. I started the second phase of the program feeling that I had much to say and much to contribute to the world stage. By midway through this training, I started to doubt that I had anything important or interesting to say at all. I struggled for subject matter.

So now I find myself wondering where to go from here. World Pulse has opened a brilliant white shining door for me and for that I honestly thank you. Now I just have to figure out how to get through it.

Thanks again for all that you have done for me and all the other beautiful amazing women in this network. It has been like a wonderful dream being here and its effect on me has had more positive repurcussions in my personal life that I could find the space or dare to report about in this tiny comment field. Though to give you a taster. From the birth of this program's applciation process to teh present day, I have gone from never having driven in my life, to taking driving lessons, to passing my test, to buying my first car and to driving it in the city. Just one small step to some of you maybe, but for me a wonderful sign of the effects the empowerment training had on me. Thanks

Connection

I'm going to stick around and am definitely going to keep writing. I still have so much to learn from all of you as well. I really appreciate your words and more importantly your friendship. Thank You!

jap21's picture

Dearest Tina

Have I told you how proud you made me when you wrote "My letters from America"? And each and every one of your posts has meant getting closer to you, the awesome writer, but also to the loving, amazing person that you are.

If I had to write about how I felt when I wasn't chosen for publication, I would have a lot to say (remember "Nothing like my journey"?), so I agree with you. It would be so great to know more about how to get published.

About the opportunities that World Pulse has opened to you, I am sure that they are awesome. I just want to ask you (beg you, if I will) not to leave this community.

What would we be without your tender and loving words? New York will be empty if you are not there with us!!

So, after thanking you from the bottom of my heart for all the support and good feelings that you gave me, I will tell you that in you I don't only have a friend. I have a sister.

Please do not orphan me, dear sister!

Hugs a bunch,

Jackie

Tina,

So wonderful to hear your reflections, thank you. You offer a wonderful reminder to the group when you say that being selected as a Correspondent is an honor and recognition in itself! Out of over 120 women, you 30 were selected to receive this months-long, rigorous training in citizen journalism and empowerment. You should certainly be proud of yourself!

I will supply everyone's feedback to their writing individually, because some people might not want that displayed publicly. If you want to post it once I send it to you, that is up to you! I think that it will be great for you to see the feedback as you continue to learn and grow as a writer. You've come a long way, and there's still so much to learn, for everyone involved here. The editorial midwives were able to offer some support, and we had hoped everyone would get much needed and deserved attention. Next year we plan to pair everyone up early on, so that support will be in place the whole way through. A great observation though, Tina, thank you.

You ask some great questions here about getting published. World Pulse has a very unique editorial perspective, and I invite the team to clarify that further for you. As we continue on together, we will certainly be working with everyone to boost your skills and confidence in pitching stories to other media outlets and getting your voice heard around the world. I encourage you to review that part of the VOF Curriculum!

Hearing your reflection about the impact on your life was great! Driving in New York must be crazy though--be careful! :) One small step, but a perfect example of the ripples the program has created in your life. Wonderful to hear your experience... maybe we can find you a larger comment field to tell us more?!

All my love,
Scott

I have made a post.

Dear Tina,
I have made a post. Post your questions in the comments there. This way all the queries will be documented at a single place. Your comment about the help made me wonder. I have also received help in a single assignment only for all the right or wrong reasons. In that too my editors were torn as one had chopped it too much according to the other. How much difference did it make for the others I would love to know.
It is for this reason I had asked Scott to post the scores of all.We have seen everyone's work and as per me noone should have any problem seeing their scores posted.

http://www.worldpulse.com/node/15381
Here is the post. I had asked you people to add your own thoughts. So do.

Our Dearest Scott, This is

Our Dearest Scott,

This is surely a wonderful journey together with great and brilliant women. I admired you for the courage in taking up the challenges and your commitment to be with us in this journey.

I know how difficult the process you've been through in choosing us but its always fullfilling to be of support , of service to others, especially to the unheard women of our times.

The jubilation is still sinking in me but I already feel the big responsibility and the challenges to keep the collective journey going . When I heard the news of being selected I can never explain how I feel - even until now i feel so exhausted , maybe because of my intense emotions which I'm trying to hold back and because I can never believe its happening to me.

I dream of becoming a journalist one day but I did not really take so serious. An international correspondent or journalist had never come to my mind, I just only admired international correspondents . But I'm taking up the challenges ahead of me to be one. Taking another step higher is difficult just as you take the challenge of being here,

Don't worry Scott, I'm with you! I always believe that we can't liberate ourselves as women if men will not support us in this journey. Women's oppression is not women;s concern alone. Women oppression is a social issue and we need the people , we need men to be there with us not in the sidelines but in the mainsteam.

More power to you and my congratulations!

hugs,
malaya
