Jennifer's Personal Announcement

Me and Jonah sharing a slice of pizza

My Dearest Correspondents,

It is with bittersweet tears mixed with anticipation and excitement that I announce that on November 15th, I will be leaving World Pulse to start working full-time with The Press Institute.

When Jensine came to me in 2008 and said she wanted a network of grassroots correspondents reporting on the frontlines of social change on PulseWire, I remember thinking, "uh-huh. How?" PulseWire was barely out of its infancy, the world did not yet know who we were, and our community was fledgling. But Jensine, like all revolutionary visionaries, is not one to sit idle. She has a vision and is impatient to make it happen!

From the first partner call with Gail Straub of The Empowerment Institute, Voices of Our Future has quite literally had legs of it own. A simple request for donated mentoring sessions as a final award turned into one-on-one mentoring for each and every one of you. An introductory call with Cristi Hegranes from The Press Institute turned into a robust curriculum that will be further shaped and refined for future years. And a chance meeting with a board member of The OpEd Project brought the art of public debate into the program.

Then, there is you. How do I even describe the irrevocable impact you have had on me, World Pulse, and our community? You are trailblazers in a field of social injustices. As Jackie might say, you are the world's chamomile in stressful and turbulent times. You are wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, lovers, activists, writers, visionaries, doers, and healers. You are woman.

Although I am leaving World Pulse, I am not leaving you. And although I will not be directing Voices of Our Future next year, I want you to feel confidence in the fact that if you choose, this journey has just begun. I am leaving you in the professional, capable and loving hands of Scott Beck, who embodies gender equality, empowerment, and balance. Scott will be working with graduates of Voices of Our Future to kick off the Global Correspondents Network, a new program of World Pulse.

These past months with all of you have been some of the most incredible, inspiring, and heart-felt months of my life. I feel I have 31 new best friends forever. Thank you for the incredible gifts you have given me through your words.

With love and tenderness,

Hey Mother Hen!

How come you are leaving your chicks, dearest Mother Hen? How is it possible? My heart is weeping, but I know that you have taken this step thinking of the best interest for your future. Saying good bye has never been as hard as now. A part of me wants to beg: 'Please, please don't go', but the rational part of my brain says I should cool off and wish you well, my dear Mother Hen.

May the road be smooth and even, may the new world be brilliant, may your heart never forget me, or that you have a real friend in me.

Love you baby...

This is not good bye, it is just see you later darling.

As the song goes: 'You only think you are leaving, but one is where one is most missed, and you are greatly missed here'

Always with you, wherever you may go, your friend,

Coming to Kenya...

Bittersweet... I dread these words, especially when they come from you. Its usually either bad news for many, or good news for some.

This time, I feel are coming to Kenya. That does not mean that I will not miss your leadership and commitment to us. I wish you the very best in your new work. I know you have probably thought so hard about this and it must be something your heart is up for. But do not forget the home of pulse where you will forever be treasured. You have indeed been our Mother hen as Jackie says. We will continue to follow in your footsteps, wherever life will lead us.

All the love and admiration.

Why Not a Woman

I am sooooo sorry to hear you are leaving, and honestly, I am not happy that you are leaving us in the hands of a man. Why not a woman, I feel so much safer with women, and I thought that was the whole point of this for women to give voice to their feelings in a safe environment. I just don't feel that safe with a man, don't know if anyone else feels that way, but there are enough spaces and places for men to be in without being in what I call women's space.

I hope you will find a woman to replace you! I have enough men in my life telling me what to do, and I don't need another one, though he may be sensitive, I think that position deserves a woman, just out of sensitivity to our issues and the topics we write about.

Congratulations on your new job, hope it doesn't take you away from your lovely son too much! Give kisses and hugs to him, please.

No offense Scott, just want a woman, in this sacred space.

No more Jennifer?? How could it be??

When I read your message, my reaction was similar to Busayo's: OH NOOO!!

A little bit shocked, but also happy for you if you're happy.

And indeed, new friends you have made. Let's stay in touch!

Karibu Kenya!

Hello Jenny,

It is indeed a bittersweet moment for you and us from Kenya... bitter because of your permanent footprints and the fulfilling touch that you have left in our midst as correspondents. We cannot imagine a life on World Pulse without your hands-on leadership and mentorship... a mother hen indeed. The moment is also sweet for us who come from Kenya because a distant dream that we only dared to dream on World Pulse is coming to fruition. A world of possibilities indeed! Because who could have imagined that such connections through World Pulse could give birth to interactions and finally projects and initiatives for the benefit of the rest of the world?! It is indeed an honour that some of us will get an opportunity to meet face to face, hug and talk to someone that we only knew in our dreams.
Jennifer, i admire your courage, your sense of leadership and your innovativeness. Let this not be a moment of tears but of joy because your new role will help you touch more lives in Kenya. Remember that by making the lives of those you interact with better, you will still be carrying on the dream of World pulse of transforming the world. Please, Welcome to kenya!

Many Hugs,

We Can Do It!

You've been an incredible person to work with. You've been an inspiration to me, to every woman in this program, and to every life you touch. I know you will continue to change the world with your clarity, passion and charisma. You are a joyful person to be around...I feel blessed to have shared this opportunity with you.

And, to all the Correspondents!

As Dr. Edonna questioned already, why not a woman? Why me? I do not take any offense to this question! I appreciate that you are willing to say how you're feeling. I respect your wanting to keep a sacred, safe and inspiring place to express yourselves freely. I want that space for you too, and it is my honor to work to help co-create that with you all. I have been with you all on this journey for many months, and I feel that I've learned so much about the world, myself, and your lives. It has been a true honor to be a part of this with you. As we proceed from here, I aim to work in partnership with you and not just be "another man telling you what to do." Who needs that?? I hope to build stronger connections with each of you and help to bridge the gap that Jennifer's departure leaves for us. I hope that you will welcome a connection with me, and be able to see me as an ally, a friend, a nurturer, a listener...a fellow on a journey with you, working to build a world that values things considered "feminine."

I will try my best to be at least half as AMAZING as our dear friend, Jennifer. Thank you again Jennifer, and we'll see you on PulseWire! Please, carry us with you on your adventures, in your heart, mind and soul.

With so much love,

Scott Beck

hugs and congratulations

It is bittersweet knowing you will still be here but in a different way. I hope we do stay in touch often and that your new project goes nicely! I read the one page you had linked to and it looks like a great undertaking, the woman's center in Kenya. Will you actually be heading over there to live? that is amazing and I wish you great luck with it!

Like Dr. Edonna I would also prefer a woman though like Scott and think it will be an interesting perspective to have him here with us. He has been great and encouraging so far, that is true!

Best of luck on the new venture and I look forward to keeping in touch!
