Happy Tihar and Chhaith!

Dear All,

We are very close to two major festivals, Tihar also said Deepawali nationwide and CHHAITH, a particular festival of Matihili people celebrate in Janakpur area.

Tihar is the festival of lights, explaining the many candles lighted. The five day festival is considered to be of great importance as it shows reverence to not just the humans and the Gods, but also to the animals like crow, cow and dog, who maintain an intense relationship with the humans. The 5 days festival ends with the Bhai tika, the day of brothers and sisters. So, the festival is of light and brothers and sisters with due respect to animals.

The Chhaith is a particular festival of Janakpur, is dedicated to sun! The sun is considered as God!!

On this auspicious occasion, wishing you a very HAPPY TIHAR AND CHHAITH 2009!!

Best,

Happy Tihar and Chhaith!

Thank you for sharing about these two festivals is Nepal. I love the reasons for celebration behind them: light, brothers and sisters, respect to animals and the sun!

I come from a culture where all of our traditions and festivals come mostly from the Bible, which makes it hard to really celebrate when you are not a follower of the Christian religion.

I love the idea of these festivals and just lit a few candles in my home to help in the celebration! I also plan to get together with my brother this weekend, so we can celebrate brothers and sisters.

Please continue to share your traditions and the great work of the Janakpur Women's Development Center with us here on PulseWire!

Warm regards,
Jade
