Exploring the World of Wikis

Good article by Tech Soup about the use of wikis. GWLN isn't there yet, but we would like to get to the point where there is a body of knowledge that needs to organized and presented for access and collaboration.

This is a great example of a wiki at work - Never Again adopted a wiki. Part of the next generation of interactive Web applications, wikis are collaborative Web sites that allow authorized users - or in some cases, anyone with an Internet connection - to rapidly and easily change the content of pages, as well as view a history of changes that others have made.

If you aren't familiar with Tech Soup and CompuMentor, check them out. They are terrific resources for non-profits - advice, cheap and free products, online help and soup recipes - it's a California thing :o)

wikis

I really like the idea that Never Again has taken up, with using wiki technology as a way to explore their work as it continues to evolve. All of this stuff makes me excited about the potential for technology in a way I, a self-professed techno-phobe never dreamed! Thanks for all the links.

Come and try it yourself

I set up a free wikispaces wiki for Global Women's Leadership Network (GWLN) at http://gwln.wikispaces.com/ This is jumping ahead a bit, but it is easier to show than to explain.

This is very preliminary but I think it is a useful pilot project. The site is easy to use. The price is right - free (actually it is ad-supported, which is why the ads appear on the right). If this seems to work, it is possible to upgrade to a cheap ad-free version without moving any work done to date. Access and edit controls are flexible and easily managed and changed. Even the web address and page design can be changed to reflect the main site. Actual implementation may be different, but this works for "show and tell" now so you get the idea.

But most importantly, it is a great way to develop ideas and material collaboratively. I hope that others will take a look, make suggestions, and the bravest will even contribute.
