A Reason To Reel in More Omega-3s

Falling short on omega-3s--the heart-healthy fats in fish--can have deadly consequences. Harvard researchers analyzed national health data on 12 diet, lifestyle, and health-related risk factors (including smoking, high blood pressure, and obesity) and found that omega-3 deficiency is the sixth leading killer of Americans, accounting for 72,000 to 96,000 preventable deaths a year--worse even than consuming excess trans fats.

There's no recommended dietary intake level for omega-3s. But in the meantime, the American Heart Association and other health experts advise eating at least two servings of fatty fish a week; you can also talk to your doctor about taking a fish oil supplement.
