Floored by question on stipend!

Hi Ladies

In my initial queries to a few women activists, i introduced the world pulse programme by sending the link to

I had one oddball question coming my way from one of them, on how much my "stipend" was and i didnt know what the heck she meant. When i queried, she pointed me to the text on this page which reads "Each correspondent will also be matched with a personal empowerment coach, have writings published in World Pulse magazines, and receive a stipend to offset communications costs associated with use of internet cafes and transportation from remote areas."

I dont know how true or accurate it is to say that "each correspondent" will get the stipend as I understood its offered to those who badly need financial assistance with access to internet and travel costs.

I dont know if others have come across this query too, but i was floored - after saying that this was a voluntary assignment and i was doing it as part of training, at my own cost and my own time.... i couldnt figure out how to respond to this twist without saying the text on the site was totally inaccurate! So i said nothing.

But it would be good to adapt this text, please, to reflect the real situation. I give the link to this page often, as it gives an at-a-glance description of what this programme is all about.

Am i the only one who's had this crazy question been asked?

Great catch, Manori

Dearest Manori,

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Our sincere apology for the uncomfortableness of the situation.

As stated in the welcome manual, "Our desire is to provide every Correspondent with a stipend to offset your Internet and phone costs, plus other related expenses for participating in the program. Unfortunately, the global economic crisis has also affected World Pulse, so we will only be able to provide stipends to those in greatest need, unless we receive full funding. We will work with each of you individually to meet your needs to the best of our ability.

The current text on the program page is an oversight on our part. We do not want to present misleading information and should have removed/changed it when our funding situation changed. I went ahead and updated the page. Please continue to send people to this page because we are about to add short bios and quotes for each of you. We are also going to create a page that lists all your assignments for easy access for anyone who wants to dive into your work. This page is going to rock!

I want to stress that our initial goal was to provide every Correspondent a stipend and we hope to meet this goal before the program ends. Until this hope becomes a reality, though, we will continue to work individually with each Correspondent offline to meet her needs.

Does this information help?

In Spirited Partnership,

p.s. Thank you again for sharing your experience. :-)

No rush

Appreciate your offer to change the text, but there's no rush. I was simply so stunned by the query that i HAD to share it with you all!

People with narrow minds will always be picking on small things like this, and I've long given up trying to please them! Life is too short to be spent pleasing everyone, all the time!

Thanks to you & Elsie for the correspondents pack which reached me yesterday. Lots to go through, and I totally love the mag - first time i saw it in print and there' so much in there! Its going to be my weekend read!
