Your help with new words for World Pulse Launch Campaign!

Dear PulseWire Community,

Hi! I wanted to introduce myself and ask for your thoughts on how to describe Leadership, Support & Action in new ways.

My name is Lanell and I just joined the World Pulse team. I am honored to play a more active role after supporting the organization as a donor and enthusiastic fan.

I worked for many years at the Global Fund for Women in San Francisco raising money to support women-led initiatives all over the world. To see the rising tide of voices shared and heard through PulseWire is inspiring. The connections are powerful.

World Pulse is ready to launch in a big way and we are beginning to work on a Launch Campaign for the Spring of 2010. But first, we need help with defining the three strong strands that weave together to create our worldwide network.

The three strands are:

1) Leaders
2) Subscribers & Supporters
3) Action

We would love to find names for the strands – ways to describe leadership, support and action in dynamic language that reflects the global nature of our community.

** In your words, in your language – how do you describe your inspiring leaders – the ones who paved the way for others to follow? Those who help to create the space for more voices to be heard and flourish?

** In your words, in your language – how do you describe supporters, the ones who provide the people power to create change and who support the work financially?

** In your words, in your language – how do you describe action? What is the word for the necessary participation of all of us to make change possible?

Please share your words and help us craft language for the World Pulse Launch Campaign.

With thanks,
- Lanell

Dear Lanell:

Leaders: All community members, in their own special way are leaders already or are in their way to become so.

Supporters: Persons who care enough to make conections between community members, with an embracing vision

Action: Writing, protesting, giving opportunities, advocating, preparing people, preparing educational events, educating people directly, doing research, creating the science of gender that can lead to change.

Is this the kind of input you are looking for? Or maybe you need something else? Please clarify, so that we can be more helpful.

Warm regards,

A Temple is a place where you are welcome to come in peace, always.

Power Words

Inspiring leaders: are people who are able to empower, motivate and be innovative in their approaches to life, they have to pave new paths that others have only dreamed of.

Supporters: are power builders, they help to provide the seeds to help grow and expand human resource.

Action: Involves movement, serving, doing, generating and cooperation with other like minded people to move things to a higher level of involvement.

For me these are words of power that help to generate power-filled people. Hope this helps

Inspiring Leader: One who not only leads the way for others but makes the journey worthwhile along the way, showing that the destination is important but that our steps to get there are what matter most.

Supporter: Those who feel like an idea is put into words, thoughts or actions for them in a new way and helps them see their way clearly and who offer support to others sometimes by just letting them know they are listening.

Actions: This is the things you do when you are feeling inspired that will most help and matter for the idea of solution based support.

It is so interesting reading these,

Words in other langauges

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for your thoughtful responses. Reading your descriptions helps as we brainstorm names to describe parts of the World Pulse network.

We’d also love to hear if you have suggestions of words in languages other than English that express the concepts of leadership, support and action.

For example, Fuerza Leadership Circles or Ubuntu Subscriber Circles.

Hi Lanell

I will tell you about a word that calls my attention, as it has changed meanings significantly over the last 25 years, and it has meant different things to different political wings until just recently, in the last 5 years, its momentum has come and most people, no matter which wing they belong to, finally agree on the meaning. It is in Spanish.

Socializar (To socialize): Today it means to 'spread the word between people looking for community based responses'.

25 years ago, the right wingers would say it meant 'produce a propaganda like media ad as to get people's support on one issue', and the left wingers would use it as 'instigate grassroots people as to take action to force the right wing off on some issue (through violent methods)'

Due to this meanings, so opposite indeed, but so alike in their lack of understanding that people need to be supported to grow, not to kill between themselves or to sell stuff between themselves, it is a word that should be used by its more equalizing meaning, which is that of spreading the word on issues that matter to the whole community looking for grassroots pacific responses that will make up for better social environments.

Hope it helps.
