Introducing myself and my journal: Cairo, Lusaka, Amsterdam

About Me:
I just graduated with a BA in sociology and will be starting my MA this September. I grew up in Zambia, have spent the last 5 years in Egypt. and will soon be moving to Holland. I am interested in issues to do with women, in particular women and Islam and how the Qur'an has been manipulated over time to oppress women and deny them their rights. I am also interested in issues of colonialism, post-colonialism and orientalism. In terms of geographical areas I am interested in the Middle East, Iran, Southern Africa, and Western Europe. I love to connect with new people in different places and am looking forward to this experience with world pulse.

My Passions:
Reading, Blogging, Traveling, Gym, Meeting new people, Writing, Coffee & Tea

My Challenges:
Reading all the books I own, becoming better-informed, getting a PhD, one day writing a book (or 2)

My Vision for the Future:
Becoming better-informed about subjects I'm interested in, meeting lots of interesting people, staying in touch with the lovely people now in my life, working in areas to do with gender and Islam, clarifying a lot of misconceptions about Islam and women

My Areas of Expertise:
Sociology; gender, gender&Islam, colonialism, post-colonialism, Southern Africa, the Middle East, Iran, Holland, development, capitalism, citizen journalism

Hello there, It's great to

Hello there,

It's great to have you here. I'm looking forward to reading your journal posts. Keep them coming even in the Hague or Leiden;)

You should look at the different groups and start a women in Islam group if you want!:) It's a great to connect with other women with the same interests!

Hi Kizzie. Thanks for your welcome :) I will definitely try to post regularly. Good idea about joining different groups, and I will try to start one about women and Islam. Look forward to meeting lots of people.

Hi Sara,

Welcome to PulseWire! We are excited to have another awesome woman from Egypt join our thriving community and we are eager to hear more from you. You have such an interesting background as a Zambian living in Egypt and headed to Holland! I lived in Amsterdam for a year in 2005-2006 and found it to be the most internationally minded city I've experienced. Are you headed there for work or school?

I encourage you to post a picture of yourself, or a symbol that has meaning to you, and then join the online dialogue! The best way to communicate and share your voice is to write in your journal, read the journals of fellow members and offer comments, or join a group and share in the dialogue by contributing to the group journal. You might also consider posting to ResourceExchange, a global bulletin board designed to offer access to needed resources as well as the ability to provide resources to those in need.

I agree with Kizzie, you should start a group for the discussion and study of Islam and invite others to join.

Looking forward to hearing more of your voice here on PulseWire!

Warm regards,

Hi Jade! Thanks for your welcome :)
That's so interesting that you lived in Amsterdam - did you like it? I definitely like how international it is, it makes me feel very comfortable. I'm planning on living in The Hague, because I like it more than Amsterdam. I'm going there to start my Masters.

I just posted a picture of myself, thanks for suggesting that. I will start posting on different places soon.

I love what you wrote about how connecting with women around the world made you learn about a lot of issues. I'm looking forward to that.

Thanks again!

Yes, I loved living in Amsterdam. So many interesting people who are perhaps among the most open-minded I've met, excellent museums, great live music, bustling markets and great local transport - though I spent most my time wandering the many canals on my bicycle. I think you will love living in the Hague as its culturally rich and the seat of many international bodies.

Looking forward to hearing more about your interests and studies!

It is exciting to have a new member from Egypt here in the community. If there is anything I can help you with or if you have any particular interests, please let me know and I will try to steer you in the right direction. I lived in Delft for a few months and loved it. With their unique style of residential architecture, it felt as if I were living in a storybook. I know you'll really enjoy your time there.

Again, welcome and I hope that you will find this to be a positive experience.

Hey Janice! Thanks for your lovely comment. I am still feeling my way round World Pulse and hope to get used to it soon. I'm interested in anything to do with gender, development, religion, and globalization. Hopefully I'll find lots of groups and people who share these interests.

Thanks again!
