Khushbu's love letter to her mentor

My Dear Mentor…

Words fail to describe my already built affection for you…I might not have met you…I might not have seen you…I do not even know who you are…but just the knowledge that you are going to hold my hand in my journey is blissful. Having you gives me the courage to break boundaries, move ahead with a renewed spirit, and conquer the world.

Let me introduce to you your devotee. I am Khushbu Agrawal from Nepal, pursuing my Masters of Arts in Economics. I work as a Research Officer for Center for Research Excellence, a research wing at Kathmandu College of Management., initiated by me .I have previously worked for South Asia Partnership International (SAPI), where I was involved in different research initiatives and worked for the newsletter on Violence Against Women in Politics (http://www.sapi.org.np/newsletter/).

Ever since I was a child, I saw how women were discriminated. I never liked it but back then, I didn’t think too seriously about the issue. But as I grew up, I wanted to bring the change, and make a difference. My involvement in SAP-I provided me with further foundation, and I was determined to fight for the cause like never before. Journalism has power like nothing else, and as a correspondent with WorldPulse, I can share stories of women which has been obscured, and unheard. During my brief journey with WorldPulse, I have already been inspired by great female thinkers from around the world, and I am looking forward to a lot more stories, ideas, and inspiration. Through WorldPulse, I intend to initiate the change which I have always wanted to.

With you, the journey is going to be even more exciting, and an even better learning experience, giving me many more reasons to embark on my mission…

Eagerly waiting

Khushbu

Hi there

Nice background. I like the fact that we have women that can talk back to male economists. I know your mentor will appreciate that.

Look forward to reading more from you.

Warmly,

Jackie

I am a business administrator with a masters in local development with gender focus, do you think we could do some research together sometime?

I have presented a project for doing research in gender issues. Let's see how it goes. I will let you know. Please let me know about your research work also. It is good to hear news about gender all over the world.

Love,

Jackie

They do

Hi Jackie

Yes, business and economics do mix together...business management teaches us to make the right decision for our business and so does economics....i believe they are closely related..if you see world's most successful businesspeople, you will be surprised to find that many had a degree in Economics because economics helps you make the most analytical calculations...

Regarding research,it is one thing i am highly interested in. I cant claim to be a research expert but i am learning, and want to get the knack of every bit of it. I have done two major research: one on public access to information and communication venues which was conducted by University of Washington, Seattle in 24 countries, and another research on gender which was called Violence Against Women in Politics in the Constituent Assembly of Nepal.

I would love to be a part of the research that you plan to conduct on gender, it would be great. Please let me know the details once the project is approved....

All the best!

Cheers

Nice!!

Dear Khushbu:

Some economists think their work has nothing to do with the micro level, and some business administrators think their work has nothing to do with the macro level. I think both, macro and micro levels, are in totally complementing each other. I see now that we can indeed work together as you are very open minded.

I will keep you posted about the approval.

I would love to know more about the study on violence against women in politics, is it in English? Is there a web page about it? Please let me know. Thank you.

Best,

Jackie

Will you post for us?

I am very fascinated and would love to see a comprehensive study created and that we can do for our own areas and share it together here. I never finished my degree but do know how to do research so would love to be a part of this, though my major was math/computer science with a view toward computer graphics/games.

I think there are many things we can do together, both here and at VOF Fans that I look forward to seeing us come together for our common purposes! That we can make our ideas and dreams a reality by working together!

What is great about this group especially is we are not afraid to get "dirty' getting the grunt work done that is needed as well as learning to write!

love,

Maria

That would be great

Hi Maria

It is great to know that you are interested in research. For me information is power, and this is what pulls me towards research.....and it is wonderful to see that there are tons of people who want to make a difference through research activities...

Even i look forward to work together for something, something that would make a difference and create a change. I am very open to ideas...Please let me know if you have anything on your mind,,,,

The group is for sure creating a revolution and i am loving every bit of being a part of it,,,

Cheers

I was fascinated reading you and Jackie's conversation so wanted to encourage you guys to bring this out for all of us to do something together. I figured what we really need is a base system so that we can compare our results internationally and have it mean something. Maybe work up a base questionnaire of how it is now and maybe some sort of 5 year plan/study and redo it and see what has changed and if we have managed to bring about the real changes we seek.

Right now, Olutosin and I are trying to plan a set of pamphlets to help woman talk about things like abuse, self-esteem, etc. It started with her simply liking one of my journals and me saying if it would help she could print them for the woman she works with. I explained about the pamphlets our hospital has of general illnesses and thought this sort of thing would be good to have for this area since so many woman can not find the words right away to describe it. So, we will be trying to figure out a way to write some and get the input of the woman here and at VOF Fans as well. It will be very good if we can create a basic set of things to help woman know they are not alone and we do understand and can help them help themselves!

It is very exciting seeing our journey continue and become real like this! I look forward to seeing what else we can accomplish together,

Maria

Wishing you well in your studies

Khushbu, I just wanted to say hello and let you know I am thinking of you as your semester draws to a close. Hopefully, you are not too consumed with exams. I am loving this dialogue with Jackie and Maria, and am in admiration as economics was not my best subject at college. That and accounting held little interest for me, whereas I thrived in law and marketing. It's funny as I have a greater understanding of economics since I left college and appreciate now how it is so closely tied to business.

Keep me posted on your research and how exciting it will be if you all collaborated on a project together. Best wishes to you,
Janice

Thank you Janice

Hi Janice

I am so glad you remember. Exams are approaching and i am overwhelmed. During my undergraduate studies, i was a full-time student. But now, for my post-graduate studies, i am a full-time employee. Its a contrast, and i am so not used to taking work and studies together. But i am trying my best to cope up with everything.

I completely agree with you when you say Economics and business are closely related. Economics actually compliment Business decisions, and yet, there are many management graduates who hate Economics. Even i was not too fond of Economics when i was studying it. But later, i realized that this is what i want to study. I really wanted to get an International degree, but fate had it that i had to stay in my country, and i honestly don't regret it. There is nothing like home after all.

The research i am working on is going fine. They are small projects, but great learning experience. I would love to join hands with our team on WorldPulse for any research assignment. How wonderful would that be....Me, Maria and Jackie needs to have a serious conversation on this regard...

Thank you very much for everything..

Love,
Khushbu
