Speak Out: Iranian Peace Activist Shirin Ebadi's Life Threatened
Join Nobel Peace Laureates Wangari Maathai, the 14th Dalai Lama, Jody Williams, Desmond Tutu, and Adolfo Pérez Esquivel in calling for the protection of Iranian human-rights lawyer and peace activist Shirin Ebadi.
As government-sanctioned intimidation increases against Dr. Ebadi, Nobel Women's Initiative urges you to write to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay, and ask that she appoint a special investigator to look into the harassment.
On December 21, Iranian security forces raided Dr. Ebadi's Defenders of Human Rights Center and the Center for Participation in Clearing Mined Areas. Then, a week later, officials seized computers and case files from Ebadi's private offices, putting her clients and contacts in danger. On January 1, a mob of 150 men attacked Ebadi's home and office as police stood by without interfering. This comes after months of increasing threats against her life and the lives of her family.
