Help Fund Mukhtar Mai's School for Girls in Pakistan

UN Photo/Eskinder Debebe

Join the effort led by Mukhtar Mai, Pakistani activist and survivor of a brutal honor crime, in the struggle for women’s rights.

Mukhtar Mai began her fight by challenging a cruel and unjust system that sanctioned her gang-rape as a punishment against her family. Mai gained international attention when she took her rapists to court instead of committing suicide as was dictated by local custom.

While Mai still faces threats and challenges from those who are resistant to change, she is continuing her fight through ongoing advocacy for women’s rights and through her support of girls’ education in Pakistan. Mukhtar Mai has used the funds from her court settlement and the international attention garnered from her inspiring story to build a successful school for girls in an area where girls’ education has rarely been valued.

Through Mercy Corps’s Mukhtar Mai Fund, you can send money directly to Mukhtar Mai to support the school for girls and her other grassroots projects. You can join this courageous and inspiring woman in her efforts to improve the situation in Pakistan for women and girls and to lay the foundations for a just society.
