World Pulse Partners With Grouse Mountain Eco-Resort to Equip Citizen Journalists With Recycled Laptops
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
June 14, 2010—Portland, OR
Grouse Mountain resort of Vancouver, British Columbia has joined forces with World Pulse to recycle used laptops and put these powerful tools of empowerment into the hands of global change makers.
Effective immediately, visitors can drop off laptops at the resort’s Guest Services office where they will find new life in the hands of World Pulse’s Voices of Our Future program participants—women like Sunita, who at the age of 16 created a savings program for the women in her 500 person village in rural Nepal after learning about microfinance from the web.
World Pulse is a media organization dedicated to broadcasting global issues through the eyes of women. The Voices of Our Future program provides citizen journalism training to 30 women leaders chosen from World Pulse’s online community, PulseWire—a network of thousands of members representing over 160 different countries.
Grouse Mountain will not only provide a collection point for donated laptops, but it will refurbish the computers and dispatch them to the selected emerging journalists from around the world.
In many countries there are significant barriers to technology access. These barriers can be even more acute for women, who typically shoulder extra responsibilities and cultural restrictions. Voices of Our Future participants hail primarily from developing countries and conflict-zones. They often must overcome incredible odds in order to participate in the program.
Combined with the citizen journalism training and mentorship provided by World Pulse, a simple computer becomes, in the hands of these women, a powerful platform for change. The contributions of Grouse Mountain, along with laptop donations from the public, will create powerful new opportunities for the Voices of Our Future participants and a ripple effect for their entire communities.
This unique partnership between Grouse Mountain and World Pulse reveals the possibilities for non-profit and for-profit organizations to combine their efforts to make a difference in the world.
