A youth leader for her community of over 700,000, Beatrice advances solutions for grassroots development, supports education for local girls, and pioneers the use of information and communication technologies to combat Uganda's HIV/AIDS crisis.

Chi Yvonne Leina

Cameroon Cameroon

Chi Yvonne Leina is a journalist from Cameroon who exposes negative cultural practices, such as the inhumane treatment of widows and breast ironing, which affects 3-4 million girls in West Africa. When her World Pulse coverage on breast ironing was noticed by CNN, the news outlet produced a story that went on to become #1 on The recent recipient of the Amelia Earhart Women Have Wings Award, which honors courageous and pioneering women leaders, Leina has launched a campaign to eradicate breast ironing. Over 20,000 women and girls have already sworn to end the practice in Cameroon. Now she is creating a media center to train women and young girls to use digital media and citizen journalism to educate and transform society.

Kara Lozier

“I am not satisfied helping one person — I want to help one person who aspires to help many more.”

Kara Lozier

United States United States

Feeling isolated in rural Vermont, Kara Lozier left her career in accounting to pursue more person-to-person connections and support others globally. When she signed up to become a Listener for World Pulse, Kara found unexpected fulfillment and purpose. She quickly connected with women and men activists worldwide online and used her strengths as a collaborator to support their initiatives, including seminars to end street harassment against women; a social media project to empower young women in Afghanistan; and funding for an Afghan male women’s rights activist to pursue his dream of a university degree. By supporting others, she has found her own voice and her calling.

Jensine Larsen

“We are on the verge of the greatest global acceleration of women's empowerment in history due to the connective power of digital media and technology.”
