World Pulse Highlights Women’s Digital Inclusion at WSIS+10

Earlier this month, World Pulse brought your voices from the WWW: Women Weave the Web Campaign to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS +10 High Level Event) in Geneva, Switzerland—one of the highest policy making platforms working on information and communication technology (ICT) for development. At the forum, we shared your recommendations from the Campaign with government officials, technology companies, and key stakeholders to advocate for the digital inclusion of women around the world!

World Pulse Correspondent Iffat Rose Gill moderated a panel, which included Lakshmi Puri, Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations and Deputy Executive Director of UN Women; Stuart Hamilton, Director of Policy and Advocacy for International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA); remote participation from World Pulse staff member Leana Mayzlina; and a special video message from World Pulse Founder and CEO Jensine Larsen. The panel highlighted the voices of World Pulse members Beatrice Achieng Nas and Olutosin Oladosu, and emphasized the importance of capacity-building, availability of local content, and digital access for grassroots women leaders.

You can watch a video of this panel here.

“I felt honored and humbled, even overwhelmed at one point, to be representing the 60,000 World Pulse sisters at WSIS+10 High Level event at Geneva,” says Gill. During the panel she emphasized the benefits of her own experiences with digital empowerment as a World Pulse Voices of Our Future Correspondent and the need to train more women around the world.

Representing World Pulse at the summit was an empowering experience for Gill. She appreciated the opportunity to represent herself not only as a member of a global community convening about ICT, but also as a grassroots woman leader participating in the kind of event “where [typically only] ‘important’ people from the western world speak about the rights of people from the developing world.”

As one of only a few sessions that explored the digital divide from a gender perspective, World Pulse’s panel made an impact at the summit and helped make the concerns and recommendations of women around the world more visible within a broader discussion around digital access. World Pulse also participated in a panel at the event organized by our partner IFLA on the importance of public access to the Internet.

The insights and recommendations represented from the Women Weave the Web campaign were well-received, and the importance of addressing the technology gender divide was affirmed in the summit’s Outcome Document:

“While there is recognition of the potential of ICT as a tool for promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women accessing and using ICTs, a “gender divide” has also been identified. We reaffirm the importance of promoting and maintaining gender equality and women['s] empowerment, guaranteeing the inclusion of women in the emerging global ICT society… We are committed to ensuring that the Information Society enables women’s empowerment and their full participation on the basis of equality in all spheres of society and in all decision-making processes. To this end, we should mainstream a gender equality perspective and use ICTs as a tool to that end.”

There is still time for your voice to be heard on the important issue of women's digital empowerment. Submit now to the campaign to make your voice count!

Genderless Communication

A wonderful advantage of the worldwide web is that we may choose to communicate in a genderless manner. The language platform is common to all and emotion is not necessarily shown in our words. This, I believe levels the playing field for discussions between males and females.

Wonderful Stage!

Shines the light of equality when women and global leaders take the light of hope in the digital empowerment and are committed to share progress, act and create partnerships to improve the quality of life for millions.
Everything begins at home and all their testimonies with the work, education are driving, model and generate change.
Immensely Glad to see brave women like Lakshmi Puri and Director Mrs. Phumzile Mlambo to exercise social leadership positions, generating change through firmness and cohesion, standing up as major human rights activists and representing the diversity of women more obstacles must be overcome to reach the digital technology and empowerment, Africa and the Middle East.
They are taking control and showing up where you can go if expanded consciousness and take the example one comes to after ensuring the rights and interests other weaker.
Remembering the First Lady Michelle Obama talk to film students at the White House said: "No matter where you come from, matter who really you are. If I have come this far so you can do it too"
That account today leading women who daily inspire us to gain confidence in change, education, empowerment and progress for all "
A road and a role model.
If they in their positions bet their time to these great changes and improvements surely is because believe in the power that everyone has, in the power of technology, positive social force, and that together we can get even better things than we have achieved.

It is a long and painful experience that those us us who have this experience see no progress because the issue is ignored everywhere. Men who do not experience sexism and women who do not experience racism will not allow attention to racism plus sexism, a unique human experience. Those of us who do experience this, experience it all together and cannot compartmentalize ourselves to only address racism and sexism as separate experiences. This marginalizing experience subjects grassroots/working class women of color in the US and certain other countries ruled by a Northern European descendant power elite to exclusion from the support provided women in other countries. We are constantly exposed to assertions by supporting agencies that women in the US are better off than women in developing nations. This is a false assertion which does not apply to women of color here where we are dying at the highest rate from every curable disease and have been at the bottom of this society for the entire history of the country. And even our sisters who manage to get significant education and other achievements are only a capricious moment away from being treated as pariahs at the whim of politicians and others with no wrongdoing on our part. Examples: Shirley Sherrod, Lani Guinier, Sista Souljah, Sojourner Truth and millions more.

Great and wonderful job.

I feel humbled and it is a great feeling to every woman.HOVO is out this summer to train some some thirty young girls and women in Ndikinimeki from the 10th to the 13th of August and from the 17th to 20th of this August,HOVO will have another training for some other thirty girls and women in Makenene.
We have many women and young girls in the Mbam Division who do not have a clue on ICT.They just watch them on TV and HOVO has decided to begin with these few.We have very limited computers, laptops, digital cameras etc for the training. We are going to work in close colaboration with Oumbe Informatique where the two training sessions shall take place.
These young ladies need this training as it is going to be of great help to them as they shall learn on how to search the web to get useful information to help them in their educational research, personal healthcare as well as get opportunities to get in contact with the world.
This is a rural area which is not exposed to may things. They are really still very ignorant and with this training,I'm confident they shall move with their heads high.
If any body feels like supporting us in making this dream come true,we shall be very grateful and thankful for the assistance.

We are the World

New meaning has been introduced to give us expanded interpretation to the famous song of 80s' We need to lead the world to a better sustainable place in partnership with men and for our children into the future. This is possible with a shift in focus, redefinition of our combined goals for humans, animals and preservation of resources.
